I am pleased to see the top websites for homeschoolers listed at Homeschool.com. I am sure we each have our own favorite we can add to it. I want to remind everyone, that you also have over $140,000 worth of reference materials at your fingertips if you have an Ocean County library card. Free, at your home, 24/7. Go to our website, www.theoceancountylibrary.org and click on the "Research and Info" link. You can access over 80 databases that we purchase for your use at home including everything from curriculum assistance, testing, auto repair, full-text newspapers and magazines, encyclopedias... the list is huge! Those homeschoolers that know about it and use it find it invaluable. Check it out!

Illustrate a Poem Contest for Black History Month

At the Ocean County Library beginning January 19th!

Illustrate one of four selected poems written by Black American Poets and you could win a $30 gift card
Illustrate a Poem Contest kicks off on Jan 19, Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. Entries will be accepted unitl 3:00 pm on February 13
Winners will be announced on February 21 at the Celebrate Black History Month program, co-sponsored by the NAACP
Four age categories will be judged. Prizes will be awarded for children ages 7-9, 10-12, 13-15, 16-18
Please stop by the Children’s desk for additional rules and selected poems.

Women's History Month Contest Information

Here at the Ocean County Library, we received flyers from the Ocean County Advisory Commission on the Status of Women promoting their 2009 contest to students from grades 1 - 12 in Ocean County. The Advisory Commission is asking students to "create a stamp recognizing women's leadership in protecting the environment on a local, state, or national level.. This can include women who have shown leadership in preserving the natural environment and reversing ecological destruction such as sceintists, engineers, business leaders, writers, filmaker, conservationist, teachers, community organizers, faithbased leaders or others whose lives show exceptional leadership to save our planet." Winners receive Visa Gift Cards and will have their stamps published in the Commission's 2009 resource and awareness publications. And there is more! Assembly Bill 375: Raising Upper Age Limit of Compulsory School Attendance

Please be aware of this bill...the salient point being that this bill raises the requirement for compulsory school attendance from 16 to 18 years of age, except for students who graduate from high school prior to their 17th birthday.
